The History of Dentures: How Have They Evolved?

Dentures are a very old form of restorative dentistry. For a long time now, dentists have been using them to help their patients reclaim complete smiles. However, this time-tested tooth replacement solution hasn’t always been exactly the same. In fact, it took centuries for dentures to get where they are today; below is a closer look at how they have gradually evolved over the years.

Early Dentures

The very first dentures date all the way back to 700 BC. The ancient Etruscans created crude prostheses that used animal teeth or human teeth to recomplete their smiles. The bases of these dentures were made out of ivory taken from walruses, elephants, and hippos.

Other ancient cultures also had their own versions of dentures. For example, indigenous tribes in Mexico would use wolf teeth to replace their own teeth. Meanwhile, the Ancient Mayans created false teeth out of carved stones and seashells.

Wooden Dentures

Wooden dentures were first created in Japan during the 1500s. Initially, the entire prosthesis would be made out of wood. However, later forms of wooden dentures would consist of a wooden base that supported teeth taken from humans or animals. Animal horns and a soft stone called pagodite would also be used for replacement teeth.

Dentures in the 1800s

In the 1800s in Europe, tooth loss grew more widespread as a consequence of increased sugar consumption. As such, dentures started to become more common. They were often made out of teeth taken from fallen soldiers or executed criminals. On top of that, poor people who needed money would sell their teeth so they could be used in dentures.

Porcelain Dentures

In 1774, a British physician created dentures that used porcelain teeth. However, they looked unnatural and were prone to chipping. This changed in 1820 when a silversmith attached porcelain teeth to a gold plate with springs and swivels. These porcelain dentures were more durable and were more aesthetically pleasing.

The Rise of Modern Dentures

In the mid-1800s, the Goodyear family invented dentures that used a hardened rubber known as vulcanite for the base. Vulcanite bases cost less than gold bases, and they were more comfortable to wear since they could be molded to match the shape of the gums.

Vulcanite dentures were widely used until the 20th century, when they were replaced with dentures made from acrylic and rubber compounds. Acrylic is an excellent option for creating dentures because it is lightweight, relatively affordable, and closely matches the appearance of the gums. It can also be easily adjusted and repaired if needed. Acrylic dentures continue to be used to this day, allowing patients to enjoy comfortable, lifelike prostheses.

Dentures have evolved quite a bit over time, but they remain a trustworthy way to reclaim a complete smile after extensive tooth loss. Don’t hesitate to speak to your dentist if you think you might need dentures.
