What Do I Do If I Lose My Invisalign Aligner?

Many people love Invisalign aligners because they straighten your smile without being obvious. Those comfortable, discreet trays are nearly invisible, hence their name. But unfortunately, that translucent appearance also makes them easier to misplace.

If you’ve lost your Invisalign tray, there’s no need to panic. Here’s what you should do next, and how to prevent it from happening again!

If You Lose Your Invisalign Aligner…

Losing or damaging an Invisalign aligner is pretty common.  Although there’s no exact data, many patients say they’ve misplaced them by leaving them wrapped in napkin during meals or in a loose bag. Others have damaged their trays when eating with them in their mouth or leaving them where a curious pet could access them.

If you can’t find yours, first try retracing your steps. If you still have no luck, or if your aligner has become damaged, be sure to call your dentist as soon as possible. There are several possible options that may work, including:

  • Switching back to your previous aligner if you only recently advanced.
  • If you’re about to advance, move to the next aligner early.
  • Your dentist may need to order you a replacement aligner if neither of those solutions is viable.

No matter what you think may be the best option, be sure to talk to your dentist first. He or she is the best person to determine which solution is appropriate for your smile. The goal is not just to replace the missing aligner, but to make sure that your treatment stays on track, so you don’t backslide or slow your progress.

How to Prevent Aligner Loss

Although it’s true that it’s very easy to lose an Invisalign aligner, thankfully there are steps you can take to help reduce your chances of it happening, including:

  • Be sure to store your aligners in their case when you’re not wearing them. It’s harder to lose a large, colorful container than it is to lose a clear tray.
  • You can also multitask and keep them in a glass of water or retainer soak to clean them while you eat.
  • Try to remove aligners in the same place each time.
  • Try to remove aligners at the same time every day.
  • Don’t put your aligners down on a table or lunch tray without storing them in your case and never wrap them in a napkin or paper to keep them safe.
  • Never put your aligners down on a table or lunch tray if you are dining away from home.
  • Always store your aligners away from pets and small children.

Remember, if you lose or damage your aligner, there’s no need to panic. If it happens, contact your dentist and explain the situation, and they’ll help you come up with a solution that keeps your smile on track!
