You and your braces have spent a great deal of time together. Despite that, you probably won’t be too sorry to see them go. And once the day arrives, you will be more than ready to show off that spectacular new smile to the world. But, just because the braces are off, that doesn’t mean you are done.

You braces have spent months perhaps even years moving your teeth into their new alignment. However, your teeth still need to settle into their positions, as do the ligaments in your jaw. While your braces got your teeth to where they are, your retainer, which you will receive after the braces come off, will make sure that your teeth stay put. There is no set time for wearing your retainer. Some people need to wear one for several months, while others may have to wear a retainer at night for the rest of their lives. However, it is important that you follow the doctor’s instructions when it comes to wearing your retainer.

There are two kinds of retainers. A fixed retainer is cemented into place behind your teeth You will need to brush and floss a fixed retainer, just as you do your teeth, and you may find that a water flosser or floss threader will help. To clean a removable retainer, scrub it very gently in a water and vinegar solution. Do not use regular toothpaste since it could damage the material.

The dentist will give you a case for your retainer when you are not wearing it. You should get into the habit of keeping that retainer in your pocket, purse or backpack to lessen the chances of losing it. Retainers are expensive to replace.
